What is PIRLS and Why is it Important for Your Kid?
As parents, we all want to understand how well our children are developing essential reading skills that support success in later grades and build lifelong confidence. One important way to measure this is through PIRLS - Progress in International Reading Literacy Study.
What is PIRLS 2026?
PIRLS is an international assessment that measures how well Grade 4 / Year 5 students can read and understand different types of texts. It happens every 5 years, with the next cycle happening in 2026 by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).
Abu Dhabi, along with other countries, participate in this assessment to understand how our students’ reading skills compare on a global scale.
What do Kids do in PIRLS?
- A reading test: Measuring how well kids understand and think about what they read.
- A short questionnaire: Kids are asked about their feelings towards reading and their reading habits at home and in school.
Why it Matters for Parents?
PIRLS helps schools and education systems understand:
- How well children are reading
- What support students may need
- How reading habits at home and school impact learning
In Abu Dhabi, PIRLS is a mandatory international assessment under the ADEK School Assessment Policy. In each school, two Grade 4 / Year 5 classrooms are randomly selected to participate. The schools use the results to improve teaching practices and ensure kids receive support in their reading development.
By supporting your kid’s reading journey, you’re helping them do their best in PIRLS, strengthen Abu Dhabi’s global standing in education, and open doors to better learning and a brighter future.
