Canadian Curriculum

The Canadian curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi offer two curricula: the Alberta and Nova Scotia curricula. Each framework governs elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education programs.

In addition to the core subjects of English Language, Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, these curricula include specific subjects to develop various competencies and various electives tailored to students' interests:

The Alberta curriculum includes Career and Life Management, Physical Education, Career and Technology Studies, and various electives.
The Nova Scotia curriculum includes Healthy Living, Personal Development and Society, Global Studies, and various electives.

Progression

Kindergarten enrolment starts at ages 4-5.
Students complete 12 years of schooling to receive a high school diploma, provided they complete the credits required by their respective province.

Assessments

Assessment related to Alberta is listed below:
Grades 3,6, and 9 take Annual Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT).
Grade 12 students are awarded a high school diploma upon completion of Internal assessments (coursework) and external assessments (exams)
Alternatively, students can obtain a Certificate of High School Achievement by completing lesser coursework. However, this certificate does not meet the minimum requirements for university admission in Canada.
Assessment related to Nova Scotia is listed below:
Grades 2, 6, and 8 take Nova Scotia Assessments.
Grade 10 take Nova Scotia Examinations in English and Mathematics.
The high school diploma is awarded based on internal assessment and the result of the Nova Scotia Examinations.
Canadian schools use external assessments as indicators of student progress and attainment. Four standardized benchmark assessments are available: NWEA MAP, GL Progress Tests, Ei ASSET, and ACER IBT.

Alberta:
Alberta Education works with international schools to enable them to offer the Alberta curriculum and its associated qualification, the Alberta High School Diploma, to students. To become an Alberta Accredited International School (AAIS), schools must undergo a process of school inspection and continuous monitoring of the school’s compliance with the requirements of accreditation.
Nova Scotia:
An international school (public or private) may be approved to offer a Nova Scotia program, giving their students the opportunity to graduate with a Nova Scotia High School Diploma. To be accredited, schools undergo an annual cycle of inspection, undertaken by inspectors from the Nova Scotia Department of Education, against recognized standards and expectations.
