Boost Your Child’s Brain and Vocabulary Growth

Understanding the critical role of early-age reading in a child's development is vital. Reading not only contributes to brain development but also enhances vocabulary and problem-solving skills. As parents, active involvement in your child's growth is key.

In a September 2022 survey conducted by ADEK, with the participation of 58,644 parents, the results were eye-opening. While 53% of parents acknowledged the importance of academic performance, only 23% engaged in daily reading with their children. Notably, 42% of parents facing financial concerns admitted to not reading with their kids at all.

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics revealed that reading just one picture book daily exposes children to 78,000 words annually, accumulating to 1.4 million words in five years. Another 2021 study from the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health highlighted that parents use more sophisticated language while reading compared to regular conversations.

Accessible options for reading include visiting Abu Dhabi's libraries or exploring online books. This serves as an excellent method to facilitate your child's learning and overall growth. Libraries, both physical and online, offer a wide variety of books that contribute to your child's language skills and cognitive development.

The Abu Dhabi Children’s Library at the Cultural Foundation on Al Hosn Street is a fantastic destination for families. More than just a collection of books, it provides an immersive experience for children, encouraging them to unleash their imagination. Transforming a library visit into a family activity not only fosters a love for reading but also creates enduring memories, possibly turning into a cherished tradition passed down to future generations.

Furthermore, entering the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library is free for parents and kids alike and children can even become members, enabling them to borrow books without any fees.

For a more interactive experience, consider having your children join a 'Reading Circle' organized by The Library on Wheels, a program by ADEK. This mobile library operates from January to March, visiting various locations in the city. To access the complete schedule and additional information, please visit ADEK’s website at https://ad.adek.gov.ae/reads.
